National
Reading Competition
Overview
The
National Reading Competition was launched in 1988 as part of
the Jamaica Library Service’s 40th Anniversary
celebrations. At the time, it only involved the age group
9 to 11 years. The competition has since grown to
include additional age levels, allowing persons form age
6 and over to enter.
In 1999,
a category for adults was introduced, persons aged 15
years and over. By 2006 this category was divided into
two groups where persons aged 15 to 20 were placed
together and the other aged 21 and over.
The
competition is organized annually on an all island basis
over a five month period – April to August. The first stage
of the competition is held at individual service
points/libraries.
The main
objectives of the competition are:

encourage the reading habit

develop the reading skill
-
cultivate an appreciation of books and
-
foster
continuing education in adults
Prizes
Prizes
are very attractive and competitive and include a mix of
cash, trophies, gifts, trips to interesting local resorts
and Caribbean destinations.
The
National Reading Fair
The Fair
was launched in October 2004 as part of the celebratory
activities to recognize the Parish and National champions in
the National Reading Competition and further promote the
importance of reading.
